If you are planning your route to the Fisherman’s Bastion to take in the panorama of Budapest and make some amazing travel photos, you can plan with public transport (buses), a tourist minibus called Official Castle Hop on Hop off bus, taking a taxi or making a 15 minute trail up the Castle Hill.
The most convenient way to get to the Fisherman’s Bastion is from the Matthias Church side where there is a bus stop and taxis are also allowed to drop off visitors. The other option is to approach Fisherman’s Bastion from the Danube side climbing the hillside and the many stairs.
The most convenient way to get to the Fisherman’s Bastion is from the Matthias Church side (left side of the photo) where there is a bus stop and taxis are also allowed to temporarily drop off visitors.
The yellow taxi is dropping of its guests on Holy Trinity Square (Szentharomsag ter) by the Matthias Church. From here you can easily walk to the balconies of the Halaszbastya to enjoy a superb view (this route is accessible with buggies and with reduced mobility). Kindly notice the cobblestones which may be a challenge with is bumps if you are visiting Budapest with a manual wheelchair.
The green and affordable way to get to the Fisherman’s Bastion from the City Centre or from near the river Danube is to take the bus 16 connecting Deak Square (M1, M2, M3 meet here) with Szentharomsag Square by the Fisherman’s Bastion, Disz Square by Buda Castle Royal Palace and Szell Kalman Square (M2) by Mammut Shopping Mall. The small blue bus is not to be confused with the number 216 bus, as, unlike the number 16 bus, it does not go to Deak Square.
Kindly notice the low floor of the blue bus which is designed with limited mobility in mind. However, the attraction is very busy and buses can get crowded at certain hours, so getting on / off the bus with a buggy or wheelchair can be difficult but not impossible. Please expect full buses if you visit the Fisherman’s Bastion / Halaszbastya at peak hours in peak season. If you can, time your visit for the early morning hours 7- 9 am or after 9 pm.
Bus Number 16 – Budapest Go is a route planner for public transport. Including buses that go to / from the Fisherman’s Bastion.
